In short: You almost certainly do not need a subscription. Windows 11 is licensed once, either as an OEM license built into your PC's firmware or a digital license tied to your Microsoft account. Check Settings > System > Activation; if it says activated, your legitimate license is already in place.

Your PC probably already owns a Windows license. Here is how to prove it before buying anything.

The short version

  • Microsoft 365 is separate from Windows activation and is optional.
  • Most PCs have an OEM license embedded in firmware, though exceptions exist.
  • The Activation page shows whether Windows is licensed and linked to your account.
  • Link a digital license to your Microsoft account before changing major hardware.
  • Check a seller's identity, invoice, refund terms, and license type before buying a cheap key.

What a Windows license actually is, in plain words

A Windows license gives you permission to run a particular Windows edition on a device. The license type determines whether you can move it later or must keep it with the original machine.

Microsoft 365 is a separate product. Its subscription covers apps such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and cloud storage. A recurring Microsoft charge does not prove Windows itself needs monthly payments.

Two common license sources are retail and OEM. You buy a retail license separately, while a PC maker supplies an OEM license with a new computer. The license cost is part of the computer's price.

A digital license describes the activation record stored on Microsoft's servers. It may come from an OEM license, a retail purchase, or an upgrade. A product key is the 25-character code used by some licenses. The other half of this decision is eSIM setup before flying.

  • OEM license: normally stays with the original computer
  • Retail license: can generally move to another computer, subject to its terms
  • Digital license: activation record stored on Microsoft's servers
  • Product key: a 25-character code used to activate some installations

Most PCs shipped with Windows 8 or later store an OEM license in UEFI firmware. Exceptions exist, including some custom-built, refurbished, repaired, and volume-licensed computers.

Open Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator and run: wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey. A 25-character result suggests an embedded key. A blank result does not prove the computer lacks a license.

Recent Windows 11 versions may not include WMIC. In PowerShell, try (Get-CimInstance -ClassName SoftwareLicensingService).OA3OriginalProductKey. The Activation page remains the practical test if both commands return nothing. There is more on what does oem vs retail windows license mean in a separate guide.

A firmware key can help after a clean installation on the same computer. Windows may read it automatically once the installation reaches the internet. The key is not a transferable retail license.

  1. Right-click Start and choose Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. Run the WMIC command, or use the PowerShell command if WMIC is unavailable.
  3. Treat a blank result as inconclusive and check Windows activation instead.

How to find a digital license tied to your Microsoft account

An upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 normally preserves the existing license type. A Windows 10 OEM license remains OEM, while a retail license remains retail. The upgrade changes the installed version, not the ownership terms.

Microsoft stores a digital activation record on its servers. The record may connect to the Microsoft account used during activation, but signing in later does not turn an OEM license into a retail license. We cover how to use the free proton vpn in its own article.

Sign in at account.microsoft.com and review Order history for a Windows purchase. Match the purchase email, edition, and invoice with the computer you are checking.

An account link can help after a major hardware change. Use the Activation Troubleshooter and select the hardware-change option when it appears. A different Microsoft account will not show the original account's license.

The Activation page gives the clearest answer about your current installation. It reports whether Windows is activated and often identifies a digital license or product-key channel. The other half of this decision is test VPN speed without bad data.

A message saying Windows is activated means the installation passed Microsoft's activation check. A message mentioning a digital license means no key is needed at present. A linked account gives you a better recovery route after eligible hardware changes.

Windows 11 Home and Pro follow the same broad licensing model. Neither edition requires a subscription, but a Home license does not activate Pro. The installed edition must match the license you own.

Windows 11 Pro can include business features such as BitLocker management and domain support. Those features do not change the activation rules. Check the edition before buying or entering a key. There is more on accessing geo blocked streaming content in a separate guide.

Run slmgr /xpr in an administrator Command Prompt for another status check. Run slmgr /dli for the installed edition and license channel. Firmware commands and activation commands answer different questions.

Common mistakes and myths about legitimate Windows licenses

Myth: Windows needs Microsoft 365. Fact: Microsoft 365 is a separate product. Windows can remain activated without a Microsoft 365 plan, while Office apps may follow different licensing terms.

A cheap key site needs careful checking. Look for a registered business name, physical contact details, clear edition information, a real invoice, and written refund terms. Check whether the seller is authorised by Microsoft or clearly explains the license source. We cover browser from url to display in its own article.

Avoid sellers offering huge discounts without explaining the license channel. Avoid keys labelled volume, developer, education, or MSDN for personal resale. A key can activate today and still violate its original terms or stop working later.

Many activation issues stem from an unlinked license, the wrong Microsoft account, an edition mismatch, or changed hardware. Check those causes before paying for another key.

Never trust a site asking for remote access, a phone payment, or a command that disables security. Microsoft activation does not require a VPN, key-finder website, or stranger controlling your PC.

What works
  • Checking first costs nothing and takes a few minutes
  • Firmware and account checks need no extra software
  • Command-line tools keep the check on your computer
What to watch
  • A blank firmware result does not settle the license question
  • A grey-market key can fail without warning

When buying a legitimate license makes sense

Person signing into account.microsoft.com on a laptop
Person signing into account.microsoft.com on a laptop

A purchase makes sense when Windows is not activated, no valid purchase record exists, and the computer has no usable OEM license. This can happen with a self-built PC, a badly wiped refurbishment, or a motherboard replacement.

Buy directly from Microsoft or an authorised digital retailer. Confirm the seller, edition, license type, invoice, support contact, and refund policy before payment. Keep every receipt and email.

Enter the key through Windows activation, then confirm the status on the Activation page. If the key fails immediately, stop troubleshooting with the seller and request a refund under its written terms.

Windows may continue running when activation is ignored, but the restrictions can become increasingly inconvenient. Expect recurring reminders, an activation watermark, limited personalisation, and possible problems with support or future reinstalls. Microsoft can also require activation after significant hardware or software changes.

Do not assume an activation failure means you need a new license. Check the edition, account, firmware, and purchase history first.

What works
  • Digital delivery avoids shipping delays
  • A verified seller provides purchase records
  • Official channels reduce resale risk
What to watch
  • Authorised digital retailers may cost more than grey-market sellers
  • You still need to confirm the edition and activation
The verdict

Check the firmware, account, edition, and activation status before you pay for another license.

Questions people still ask

Do I need Microsoft 365 to keep Windows 11 activated?

No. Microsoft 365 covers Office apps and storage. Windows 11 activation is separate and does not require that subscription.

How do I know if my license is OEM or retail?

A firmware key suggests an OEM license, but a blank command result proves little. Check purchase records, the activation channel, and the computer's original paperwork.

What if my PC says Windows is not activated?

Run the Activation Troubleshooter, check the installed edition, and sign in with the Microsoft account used during activation. Review purchase records before buying anything.

Can I move my Windows license to a new PC?

A retail license may move to another computer under its terms. An OEM license normally stays with the original computer. An account link can help with eligible hardware changes, but it does not change an OEM license into retail.

Are cheap keys from auction sites legitimate?

Treat them as high risk. Ask for the license source, edition, invoice, business details, refund terms, and proof of authorisation. Walk away if the seller avoids those questions.

Do Windows 11 Home and Pro have different licensing rules?

They use the same broad activation model, but their licenses are not interchangeable. A Home key will not activate Pro, so match the key to the installed edition.

What happens if I ignore activation indefinitely?

Windows can keep running, but reminders, a watermark, personalisation limits, and future activation problems can remain. Resolve the license issue before reinstalling or changing hardware.

Does upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 change my license type?

Normally, no. The upgrade preserves the existing OEM or retail basis, although the installed edition must match the license.

What if the firmware command returns an error or access is denied?

Open Terminal with administrator rights and try the PowerShell command instead. If access remains denied, check the Activation page and the PC maker's records. A command failure is not proof that no license exists.

Do I need a VPN for Windows activation?

No. Activation uses a normal internet connection to Microsoft's servers. A seller demanding a VPN or remote access is displaying a scam warning.

I have talked more people out of buying a Windows license than into one. The existing activation record often settles the question.
